«Rotunda» Light Installation
Noyabrsk, Russia | 2020
Description:
A large-scale light installation designed for disassembly and reassembly in extreme Arctic temperatures.
The structure had to be transported 2500 miles by truck from St. Petersburg and assembled in outdoor temperatures of -35℉.
Dimensions:
49.2 × 49.2 × 30.2 ft (W × L × H)
Software:
Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk AutoCAD, CorelDraw, Solid Edge
Materials:
Square and rectangular steel tubes, steel rods, steel sheets, composite panels, monolithic polycarbonate, plywood, duralight, LED strips, garland
Technologies:
Welding, tube bending, steel sheet bending, CNC laser cutting, CNC milling
My roles in this project:
• Performed structural analysis of the dome
• Created a full 3D model and technical drawings for manufacturing
• Exported CNC cutting files for both laser and milling machines
• Provided on-site assembly supervision
Key achievements:
• Developed a lightweight yet strong modular structure that has been successfully assembled and disassembled annually for New Year festivities for the past five years, demonstrating effective modular design and ease of installation.
• Designed custom plywood jigs for welders, which increased welding efficiency by 3x and ensured on-time delivery of the structure under tight production deadlines.
